Johan van der Vlag is a senior scientist, head of the Nephrology Research Laboratory, and staff member of the Division of Nephrology since 2003.
Dr. Johan van der Vlag

Research interest is focused on two main topics: glomerular diseases and transplantation immunology. Research on glomerular diseases is directed towards unravelling the underlying molecular mechanisms of proteinuria and glomerular inflammation. Research projects currently running are aimed at delineating the role of heparan sulphate proteoglycans at the structure-functional level in several glomerular diseases and identification of triggers that lead to the development of pathogenic anti-chromatin auto-antibodies in lupus. The research on transplantation immunology is directed at prolonging graft survival and is focused on the generation and application of tolerogenic dendritic cells.
