Dr. Catharina Van der Zee studied Biology and specialized in Molecular Neurobiology and Biomedical Sciences including physiology, anatomy/histology and behavior. During the last 15 years, studies have been focussed on experimental sprouting models in rodents: peripheral nerve regeneration, peripheral neuropathies, kindling-induced mossy fiber sprouting, and collateral sprouting of the basal forebrain cholinergic system. In addition, research directed to plasticity of the brain (related to Alzheimer's disease) emphasized on the role of neurotrophins and neurotrophin receptors. Recently, the impact of LAR protein tyrosine phosphatase deficiency is studied in two mouse models of PNS and CNS axonal outgrowth. Currently, a standardized behavioral test battery for the analysis of cognitive, emotional, social, and motor behavior of transgenic and knockout mice is being validated and extended (in collaboration with Prof. A. Cools, psychoneuropharmacology, Ms. F. Streijger, Cell Biology, and the Animal Care Facility). The biological and behavioral consequences of Brain Creatine Kinase deficiency in mice demonstrated for instance impaired spatial learning and habituation, and age-related cognitive defects compared to wildtype control animals. Observations relating to aggressive behavior, nest building, and anxiety are studied as well. The behavioral facility data are combined with a histological/anatomical analysis of the transgenic and knockout mice to unravel phenotypical changes, especially in the brain.
